Vandals Spray Paint Virgin Mary Statue

(CBS) MARENGO, Ill. Nuns from the Fraternity of Notre Dame in Marengo, IL returned home on New Year’s Eve from Chicago to a heartbreaking scene. Vandals had spray-painted statues, including one of the Virgin Mary.

The vandalized Mary’s face and much of her front, including the cross on the rosary she held, were painted black, and the brick-and-concrete pillar on which she stood was blasted with green paint. The vandals painted “LEAVE” in bold black across her body, and “KKK” and “666” on the stand. A large stone located near the virgin statue bore the command “GO AWAY” in black paint.
