We must be open-handed with Our Lord and give generously, but let us never forget that He is a hidden treasure, and that few souls know how to find Him. To find a hidden treasure we too must hide, our life must be a hidden mystery. The author of the Imitation tells us: "If thou wouldst know and learn anything to the purpose, love to be unknown, and esteemed as nothing" (Bk. I, ch. ii). . .
"Having left all things else, he must leave also himself, and wholly go out of himself, and retain nothing of self-love" (Bk. II, ch. xi) . . .
"Let one man seek this, another that; let this man glory in this thing, another in that, and be praised a thousanq., thousand times; but thou, for thy part, rejoice neither in this nor in that, but in the contempt of thyself" (Bk. III, ch. xlix).
