A true lover of Christ and a diligent pursuer of virtue does not hunt after comforts, nor seek such sensible sweetnesses; but is rather willing to bear strong trials and hard labours for Christ. For heavenly comfort is promised to such as have been proved by temptation. To him that overcometh, saith Our Lord, I will give to eat of the tree of life (Apoc. ii, 7).
-Bk. II, ch. ix.
From a pure heart proceeds the fruit of a good life.
-Bk. III, ch. xxxi.
____________
Make the sacrifice to God of never gathering fruit; that is to say, of always feeling dislike for suffering and humiliation, of seeing the blossom of your desires and your good will fall to the ground without ever producing fruit during your lifetime. At the moment of your death, in the twinkling of an eye, God will make ripe fruit appear on the tree of your soul.
