WASHINGTON--Cardinal Justin F. Rigali, chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop William E. Lori, chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, have issued the following statement:Charity would require that one give Pelosi the benefit of the doubt and assume she was "mistaken."
In the course of a “Meet the Press” interview on abortion and other public issues on August 24, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi misrepresented the history and nature of the authentic teaching of the Catholic Church against abortion....
However, given the publicity about Pro-death "Catholic" politicians over recent years, any rational being would be led to understand that such ignorance is not the reason for her "misrepresentations" but rather, it stems from a prideful dissent from the natural moral law and Catholic teaching.
In other words, she spewed forth lies about what the Church teaches. Any Catholic politican who would be as willfully ignorant as Pelosi appeared to be should resign any and all positions of public office. To "misrepresent" a teaching as simple and fundamental as that of abortion and conception casts grave doubts on her ability to use her intellect to understand any other subject.
