Love is swift, sincere, pious, pleasant, and delightful; strong, patient, faithful, prudent, long-suffering, courageous, and never seeking itself: for where a man seeks himself, there he falls from love.
-Bk. III, ch. v.
________________
She knew that whilst we are upon this earth prayer may sometimes be wearisome, but that to persevere in it in spite of fatigue, is to unite ourselves to Our Lord in His agony in the garden. To a novice who told her that she was looking forward to her retreat as it would mean a peaceful rest, she said: "So you are going into retreat in order to enjoy a rest? I am going that I may give myself more completely to God. Remember what is said in the Imitation: Where a man seeks himself, there he falls from love."
-Esprit de Sainte Therese.
