When does a dinner invitation become a scandal?

When it involves the fabled Al Smith Dinner in New York, all you have to do is invite President Obama:

By tradition, the storied Al Smith Dinner has provided a few hours of comic relief from the angry volleys of the campaign trail — a white-tie charity banquet held in the weeks before Election Day, hosted by the archbishop of New York and featuring speeches by the two presidential candidates on the condition that they lob nothing more than good-natured jibes.

But the Catholic hierarchy’s fierce feud with President Obama, abetted by the increasingly sharp tone of the 2012 elections, is threatening to invade this demilitarized zone and give New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan a case of pre-dinner agita.

Dolan has reportedly extended an offer to Obama (as well as his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney) to attend this year’s dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria, scheduled for Oct. 18, and reports say the president has accepted. That has mobilized abortion opponents, who view Obama as the worst thing since Roe v. Wade and an enemy of religious liberty because of his administration’s controversial birth control mandate.

The Rev. Frank Pavone, head of Priests for Life, a leading abortion opponent based in Staten Island, said Monday (Aug. 6) that “the polite putting aside of differences for a while amounts to scandal.”

“There comes a time when enough is enough and we can no longer afford to give people a reason to doubt our position as a Church,” Pavone wrote in an email. “So no, I don’t think the invitation is appropriate at this time.”

“Better to cancel the event than have it become another cause for scandal in the Catholic Church,” Randy Engel, head of the U.S. Coalition for Life, told LifeNews.com, an anti-abortion website.

The New York Archdiocese has not formally announced that Obama and Romney have been invited, or have accepted. But Meghan McGuinness Myers, executive director of the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation, which organizes the annual fundraiser on behalf of various children’s charities, told LifeSiteNews that Obama had been invited and had accepted.

Remember Proposition 71, the California initiative that pledged $3 billion dollars of public funds to this dubious research? Six years later, after destroying innumerable embryos and devaluing human life, they have nothing to show for their investment. Only adult stem cell research has shown any promise. 'Change and Hope’ Turned Out to Mean 'Culture of Death,’ Says Archbishop Burke

The pro-abortion policies of the Obama Administration are part of the “culture of death” in America, said Archbishop Raymond L. Burke at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast on Friday.

Burke, who serves in the Vatican as the prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, warned of a moral crisis in America specifically calling Pres__ent Barack Obama to task along with pro-abortion Catholic politicians and Catholic voters that support pro-abortion, pro-homosexual positions.

“What those who were so enthused about the strong message of change and hope in the United States, delivered during the last election campaign, are now discovering is a consistent implementation of policies and programs which confirm and advance the culture of death, which can only finally leave our world without the great hope,” said Burke.

Obama Bans Embryonic Stem Cell Research???

On Wednesday, only two days after he lifted President Bush’s executive order banning federal funding of stem cell research that requires the destruction of human embryos, President Barack Obama signed a law that explicilty bans federal funding of any "research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death."

The provision was buried in the 465-page omnibus appropriations bill that Obama signed Wednesday. Known as the Dickey-Wicker amendment, it has been included in the annual appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services every fiscal year since 1996.

The amendment says, in part: "None of the funds made available in this Act may be used for—(1) the creation of a human embryo or embryos for research purposes; or (2) research in which a human embryo or embryos are destroyed, discarded, or knowingly subjected to risk of injury or death."...

Unless Congress passes and President Obama signs new legislation to repeal Dickey-Wicker, it will now be the law of the land at least through September 30, when this fiscal year ends....

While a great deal of information regarding the Presidential candidates has been aired, published and emailed, one significant fact has NOT been widely publicized. You may well know Senator Obama supports human cloning and embryonic stem cell research and advocates using our tax dollars to fund this unethical research but did you realize he does NOT support funding adult stem cell research? He would deny funding to the broad arena of ethical stem cell research which is producing real cures and treatments and waste our tax dollars on destructive and unproductive human cloning (FRC Presidential Survey above).

I realize the Presidential campaign is critically important and garners most of our attention. However, we will also be electing five of our six statewide officials tomorrow. Every one of these offices provides a stark contrast between candidates who oppose human cloning and those who champion unethical human experimentation. The MAHC survey provides a clear key to those who support a true ban on human cloning and those who do not.

40 Days to Make a Difference

Believe it or not, forty days from now you will no longer be bombarded by political ads, phone surveys and your mailbox will once again be mostly bills. Although we all look forward to that day, let us not lose sight of the great opportunity we have to decide who will lead our nation and our state through the challenging time ahead.

While we prepare to constitutionally ban human cloning in 2010, I urge you to join me in committing to Make a Difference in 2008.

After the 2006 election, I cannot tell you how many people said to me, "I should have done more". This election season provides stark contrasts at every level between

candidates who uphold the value of all human life and

those who consider certain human beings expendable commodities.

This November, Missourians will also vote on a tricky and devious proposition crafted by many of the same parties that backed Amendment 2.

Proposition A is titled, get this, "The Schools First Initiative". It is 22 pages long, is funded by two major casinos and is a sneaky attempt to eliminate the protective $500 loss limit. Sound vaguely familiar? Don't be fooled by dangerous and deceptive proposition A!

Certainly this Presidential Election is critically important, but I urge you to join me in working to Make a Difference in Missouri as well.

I'm asking you to join me in committing 20 hours over the next 40 days to the campaign(s) of your choice.

Many of you will give a lot more hours and some of you will only be able to commit to 5 or 10 hours. We are all busy people with different interests and skills, but we can all Make a Difference for the Future of Missouri.

New McCain Statement on Stem Cell Research Shows More Pro-Life Movement

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The campaign of presidential candidate John McCain has released a new statement on his position on stem cell research funding that has some observers saying it shows the senator continues to move in a pro-life direction on key bioethics issues.

The campaign sent comments on Monday to the ScienceDebate2008 web site on the issue of stem cell research and federal funding....

Deal Hudson a leading pro-life Catholic writer, writes approvingly of the McCain statement.

"There has been some evidence during the campaign that McCain's position on embryonic stem cell research was softening. I was skeptical of drawing any conclusions having discussed it with McCain several times. But now the more optimistic prediction has come to pass,' he explained.

Hudson interprets the McCain statement as saying he will continue the current policy of President Bush, which limits any federal funds for new embryonic stem cell research involving the destruction of human life....

Human Cloning Proponents Attempt Political Maneuver of Missouri Supreme Court

(St. Louis, Missouri) This week both the individual Intervenor-Defendants and the Secretary of State submitted requests to the Missouri Supreme Court asking the court to “remand the case with orders to vacate the summary statement portion of the judgment.” It is interesting to note that the Secretary of State has now completely reversed the legal position she has consistently taken for the past several months., The Secretary previously filed not one but two requests for transfer to the Missouri Supreme Court (one to the Court of Appeals and one directly to the Supreme Court) following the Court of Appeals decision on May 2, 2008. Apparently, the Secretary’s legal advisors have changed their minds and now believe the case is moot—even though the purported “mooting” event occurred long before the Secretary filed either one of her requests for transfer. More likely, the Secretary has now decided it is politically expedient to vacate two decisions that set a precedent of courts actually holding her to her constitutional duties and correcting a ballot summary where she has plainly violated the law.

It is also interesting that the Secretary’s political allies, the Intervenors, joined the Secretary in claiming the lower court opinions should be vacated, but took off the gloves by feeding the Supreme Court overtly political arguments to support their legal “mootness” argument. Plaintiffs’ attorney Edward Greim made the following statements in a response submitted to the Missouri Supreme Court yesterday. “The Missouri Supreme Court should explicitly and unequivocally reject such an outcome-based, politically-driven application of the mootness doctrine. The political arguments raised by the Intervenors have nothing to do with whether a controversy is moot.”

“Missouri citizens must have judicial recourse when an elected public official violates the public trust for his or her political agenda. The law allows citizens this recourse for ballot initiatives and the courts have responded. We urge the Missouri Supreme Court to decide the issue on law and not politics,” stated Lori Buffa, MD, chairwoman of CWC.

British Government OK's Creation of Human-animal Embryos

British scientists will be allowed to research devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s using human-animal embryos, after the House of Commons tonight rejected a ban...

They pretend to be God and engage in monstrous acts.

Edward Leigh, Conservative MP for Gainsborough, moving the amendment to ban all admixed embryos, said mingling animal and human DNA crossed an “ultimate boundary”. He said that exaggerated claims were giving patients false hope and that the dangers of the research were unknown.

Mad scientists care not a whit about boundaries, moral or otherwise.

He said: "In many ways we are like children playing with landmines without any concept of the dangers of the technology that we are handling.”

Where will the creation of chimeras lead us? Will some crackpot in the future unwittingly unleash some devastating plague upon civilization?

It seems as if those pushing for such grotesque experimentation and research are like little children playing with dangerous tools or weapons. What absurdity!

It seems that the more we think we learn, the more stupid we become. When we act absent basic norms of morality, we hurt not only ourselves, but others as well.

Missouri Cures Without Cloning Campaign Update

I know many of you have questions as we shift our focus longer term and I hope this email will answer those questions.

First, as noted by one liberal blog, our commitment to protecting our state from becoming a haven for human cloning experiments continues to discourage cloners from setting up shop in Missouri. While our movement to close the human cloning loophole in our constitution builds, our coalition partners work hard to protect taxpayer dollars from this unethical, unnecessary and unproven research. All of us working together will be victorious because Missourians do not support human cloning experiments.

Many of you have asked about the logistics and timeline for the next phase of the campaign.

This summer and fall we will hold informational meetings across the state. These meetings will provide an opportunity for us to share ideas and plans. We will also continue to expose the deceptions about human cloning and share the truth about the scientific breakthroughs that provide real cures and treatments.

In addition to the Presidential race, many critical Missouri leaders will be elected this November. I encourage you to actively support candidates who stand with us in opposition to human cloning.

This November, we will submit our initiative petition for the 2010 general election to the Secretary of State. We are prepared for the possibility that Robin Carnahan will still hold the office and will be as devious and misleading as she has been during this term. However, even if we have to proceed through another court challenge, we should have ample time to collect signatures. We could be collecting signatures a year from now!

...on Saturday, November 17 the UK based Telegraph announced the scientist who cloned Dolly the Sheep was abandoning human cloning research in favor of more promising stem cell research.

This important announcement by Ian Wilmut, one of the most respected pioneers in cloning research, was quickly followed by even more exciting news. On Tuesday, November 20 two teams of researchers, one in Japan and one in Wisconsin, reported success in "reprogramming" ordinary skin cells to take on the pluripotent capabilities of embryonic stem cells. Experts and reporters around the world grappled with the right words to explain such a significant breakthroughs....

This staggering breakthrough was actually reported quite accurately by many media sources. However, the two largest newspapers in Missouri, the Kansas City Star and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch scrambled to minimize the news and reiterate the need to continue human cloning research. Predictably biased editorials appeared over the weekend in both papers. I find it fascinating that the same journalists who have hailed every fantastic claim made by the cloning proponents are now urging caution regarding the prospects of direct reprogramming. And while the Post-Dispatch still used the ridiculously inaccurate term "very early fertilized eggs", the KC Star was forced to finally use the term embryonic stem cell research. It must have nearly choked them.

These lies, decptions and falsehoods should be expected. The public and the citizens of Missouri were deceived by lies and deceptions propagated by the supporters and promoters of Amendment 2. News like this should serve as a death knell to public funding of human cloning and the killing and destruction of innocent human life.

We have much to be thankful for with this exciting scientific breakthrough but our work is far from done. Did the so-called Coalition for Lifesaving Cures herald this newest development which could provide real cures and therapies for those suffering? Nope. In fact, they are going to need our tax dollars now more than ever to pursue their cloning agenda as private research funds will target the more promising reprogramming technology.

This has been one of my longer emails but the ramifications of this breakthrough are so critical. I encourage you to also read the articles posted on our web site for more information. Armed with the facts, I urge you to write letters, hundreds of letters to the editors of every paper in the state (especially the STL Post-Dispatch and the KC Star). I simply cannot think of a better time to show the voters of Missouri why it is imperative to close the cloning loopholes in our constitution. We don't want human cloning, we don't need human cloning and we really don't want to pay for it!

New stem-cell technique could eliminate moral problems

Philadelphia, Nov. 20, 2007 (CWNews.com) - A new technique for obtaining stem cells could eliminate the public pressure for destructive research on human embryos, a Catholic think-tank reports.

The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) has welcomed the results of research by Dr. Shinya Yamanaka and Dr. James Thomson, who have found a method of using skin cells to obtain pluripotent stem cells. By "reprogramming" the skin cells, the researchers found that they could reproduce the features that scientists find most desirable in embryonic stem cells...

I'm not certain that this will appease those who want to continue to feed at the public trough while killing children in their embryonic stage, but we can pray that all human cloning facilities are eventually closed down.

Cures Without Cloning Initiative Campaign

Cures Without Cloning - St. Charles County has scheduled three meetings for this weekend. These meetings are designed for you and anyone who is interested in the Cures Without Cloning Citizens' Initiative effort. The attendees will be brought up to date on where we are in the effort, what the strategy for St. Charles County is, and how individuals can help. There will also be an opportunity for anyone who may need to be trained to circulate a petition to do so at the end of the meeting. Attached is a flyer regarding the meetings. Please invite anyone you know that is interested in this issue. One only needs to attend one of the meetings.

The "Cures Without Cloning" campaign will begin to gather signatures very soon for the Initiative Petition required to place the cloning issue back before the voters in 2008.

Signatures will be gathered in a variety of places: churches, neighborhoods, individuals contacting family and friends, etc. Volunteers will be able to participate in whatever venues they are most comfortable.

Gathering signatures must be done according to the specifications of the Secretary of State, and must be done only by those who are registered.

There are three special meetings scheduled for November 17, 18, or 19. These meetings are being held to give those attending the information on this campaign thus far - the grand plan, the situation with the Secretary of State, and the strategy for St. Charles County. 'Cures Without Cloning' Challenges Ballot Language

Members of Cures Without Cloning are challenging a ballot summary of their initiative approved by the Missouri Secretary of State earlier this month.

Cures Without Cloning filed a suit in Cole County Circuit Court late Oct. 19. The suit is requesting the court to invalidate the ballot title certified by Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and to adopt a newly proposed summary.

The human cloning supporters in Jefferson City deliberately twisted the language of the proposed ballot initiative to confuse voters. Deception and trickery are common tactics for the political hacks intent on clouding the issues regarding embryonic stem cell research and human cloning...

Steve Rupp, in a letter to the Editor of the St Louis Post Dispatch writes about the issues:

Second casualty: Truth
Regarding the editorial on embryonic stem cell research, "The first casualty" (Oct. 16): Unfortunately, the editorial created the second casualty: the truth.

The editorial states that the proposed new amendment would replace the Amendment Two definition with a new one. Actually, the new amendment would put into our Constitution the only definition of cloning that is accepted universally and by the National Institute of Health and virtually every textbook ever written on the subject. It is the definition recognized and then banned by seven states and more than a dozen countries around the globe. It is the only definition that is supported by science.

The editorial says that "inducing an egg to divide in a petri dish is not cloning." True. That cannot be done. An egg cannot divide; an embryo can. Using the word egg in this context shows a lack of scientific knowledge or a deliberate attempt to mislead. The editorial says, "To qualify as cloning as most people understand the term...." People should know that somatic cell nuclear transfer is cloning. People are smart enough to get it. They just need a newspaper that uses scientific fact and not language created by those who stand to profit by dehumanizing the human embryo.
