Condescension of Love
Love seeks, as far as possible, to put itself on an equality with the beloved. Now God could not make us equal to Himself, since the idea involves a contradiction. It was not possible for Him to lift us up to His level, and to transform us into gods. But, though He could not place us on a level with Himself, He could at least abase Himself and sink to our level. This His infinite love prevailed upon Him to do. He assumed our nature; became a man as truly as we are men; clothed Himself with our infirmities and necessities, and 'dwelt amongst us' as one of ourselves.
