Bigots, Slavery and Ignorant Citizens

Today's Post Dispatch has a couple of Letters to the Editor regarding the Missouri Embryonic Stem Cell Issue and the Bishops' desire to educate the faithful regarding things intrinsically evil such as cloning and embryonic stell cell experiments.

In order to demonstrate the complete absurdity of one letter and the apparent lack of functioning brain cells of the author, I have modified the letter ever so slightly:

The Catholic Bishops of Missouri are putting the cart before the horse by ordering priests to deliver a homily condemning parishioners who may sign a petition that would allow a ballot initiative on embryonic stem cell research[...SLAVERY].

Telling Catholic politicians how they should vote on issues that affect the entire population, not just Catholics, is a disservice to this great state. If a politician can't vote for legislation beneficial to the majority of the population without fear of retribution from the church, then Catholics shouldn't run for public office. If bishops want to inform parishioners about stem cell research[...SLAVERY], they should invite professionals who know of the tremendous benefits that may be derived from this research [endeavor] to join in open discussions, not force feed parishioners the bishops' version, which seems to have little basis in fact.

I am with former U.S. Sen. John Danforth on this.

By the way, check out the first letter written by L.J. Welch ofgh Ridge. It is a wonderfully coherent and reasoned letter. He calls to task Mr. Danforth for his accusatory remarks and lack of reason. A great letter!
