Dost thou think to have always spiritual consolations when thou pleasest? My saints had not so; but met with many troubles, and various temptations, and great desolations. But they bore all with patience, and confided more in God than in themselves; knowing that the sufferings of this life bear no proportion to the greatness of the glory to come.
-Bk. III, ch. xxxv.
_______________
Let us work together for the salvation of souls, for we have but the single day of this life in which to give Our Lord this proof of our love. The morrow will be eternity, when you will receive a hundredfold in return for the happiness which you have sacrificed. He knows the extent of your sacrifice, and that the sufferings of those dear to you add fuel to your own, for He Himself underwent this martyrdom for the salvation of our souls. He saw His immaculate Mother standing at the foot of the Cross, her soul pierced by the sword of suffering, and I beg of Him to take pity on your Mother and comfort her. If those whom you are about to leave for His sake were to be granted a glimpse of the glory in store for you, of the many souls who will enter Heaven owing to your apostolate, they would already have received the reward of their unselfishness in parting with you.
