Pope Benedict XVI has bestowed a key position on an American prelate [Archbishop Raymond L. Burke] who was the leader of a faction in the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that believes Catholic voters should judge political candidates primarily by their views on abortion.Leader of a faction in the USCCB? Who, then is leading the opposing "faction" in the bishops' conference (as if we don't already know...The Church Lady asks, "could it be - Satan?") The reality that so many of the bishops appear to be invertebrate Democrats seems to be a non-issue for the editorial writer. Instead, the LATimes would rather impugn the integrity and character of of Archbishop Burke because he was one of a seemingly small group of strong, courageous and faithful bishops who spoke the truth and sought to enlighten the intellects of their flocks. But, then, lets not let the facts cloud the fantasy that the LATimes wants to present to "thinking" Catholics.
So who is leading the faction which supports public scandal and sacrilege?
At the other pole are churchmen such as Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles and Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, who has been savaged by conservative Catholics for refusing to bar pro-choice Catholics such as Kerry and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from the Communion rail. Asked how he would respond to Catholic politicians who support legalized abortion, Wuerl replied: "Teach. That is what Jesus did."It's too bad that Wuerl teaches error and by his inaction, supports pro-death politicians and their deadly scandal and sacrilege. McWuerl, as he is known in some quarters, emulates the actions (inactions) of his inept predecessor, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who [thank God!] retired recently. Still, we continue to pray that the Archdiocese of Washington might someday be given a true and faithful bishop - a strong and courageous man who stills has a backbone!
The struggle among bishops over this question has resulted in a compromise election guide for Catholic voters. It declares: "As Catholics, we are not single-issue voters. ...Compromise? How can one compromise with the devil? The USCCB knows how!
