How can a life be loved that hath so great bitterness, that is subject to so many calamities and miseries? How can it be called life, since it begets so many deaths and plagues?

It grieved me to see her so ill, and I often said: "How sad life is!" but she would at once correct me: "Life is not sad, but joyful. If you said: How sad is our exile! I could understand; it is a mistake to call what will pass away life.
