Gospel for Nov 4, Memorial: St. Charles Borromeo, bishop
Old Calendar: St. Charles Borromeo; Sts. Vitalis and Agricola, martyrs
From: Luke 14:15-24
Parable of the Invited Guests
[15] When one of those who sat at table with Him (Jesus) heard this, he said to Him, "Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the Kingdom of God!" [16] But He said to him, "A man once gave a great banquet, and invited many; [17] and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, `Come; for all is now ready.' [18] But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, `I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it; I pray you, have me excused.' [19] And another said, `I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them; I pray you, have me excused.' [20] And another said, `I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.' [21] So the servant came and reported this to his master. Then the householder in anger said to his servant, `Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and maimed and blind and lame.' [22] And the servant said, `Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.' [23] And the master said to the servant, `Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. [24] For I tell you, none of those who were invited shall taste my banquet.'"

Commentary:
15. In biblical language the _expression "to eat bread in the Kingdom of God" means sharing in eternal beatitude, of which this great banquet is a symbol (cf. Isaiah 25:6; Matthew 22:1-4).
16-24. If God invites someone to know Him in faith, he should sacrifice any human interest which gets in the way of replying to God's call, no matter how lawful and noble it be. The objections we tend to put for- ward, the duties we appeal to, are really just excuses. This is why the ungrateful invitees are blameworthy.
"Compel people to come in": it is not a matter of forcing anyone's freedom -- God does not want us to love Him under duress--but of helping a person to make right decisions, to shrug off any human respect, to avoid occasions of sin, to do what he can to discover the truth.... A person is "compelled to come in" through prayer, the example of a Christian life, friendship-- in a word, apostolate. "If in order to save an earthly life it is praiseworthy to use force to stop a man from committing suicide, are we not to be allowed use of the same force--holy coercion -- to save the Life (with a capital) of many who are stupidly bent on killing their souls?" ([St] J. Escriva, "The Way", 399)

Vote Wisely-The Future of Our Country & Our State Is at Stake
Tomorrow could be the most important election of our time. I urge you to arm
yourselves with the facts regarding candidates and ballot issues and share those
facts with your friends and family. A few online resources for information on
candidates, judges and statewide ballot issues are:
MAHC Candidate Survey Results (updated)
Family Research Council Presidential Survey
Missouri Family Network
MetroVoice (provides links to other endorsements and
recommendations as well)
While a great deal of information regarding the Presidential candidates has been aired, published and emailed, one significant fact has NOT been widely publicized. You may well know Senator Obama supports human cloning and embryonic stem cell research and advocates using our tax dollars to fund this unethical research but did you realize he does NOT support funding adult stem cell research? He would deny funding to the broad arena of ethical stem cell research which is producing real cures and treatments and waste our tax dollars on destructive and unproductive human cloning (FRC Presidential Survey above).
I realize the Presidential campaign is critically important and garners most of our attention. However, we will also be electing five of our six statewide officials tomorrow. Every one of these offices provides a stark contrast between candidates who oppose human cloning and those who champion unethical human experimentation. The MAHC survey provides a clear key to those who support a true ban on human cloning and those who do not.
Lastly, thanks to all of you who have rolled up your sleeves and joined me in making a difference these last 40 days. We are down to the wire now.
Please make a few more phone calls.
Please send a few more emails.
Please help volunteer to help a campaign tomorrow. Please, please, please VOTE WISELY!

-Bk. III, ch. xxiv.
Nature rejoices in a multitude of friends and kindred; she glories in the nobility of her stock and descent: she fawns on them that are in power, flatters the rich and applauds such as are like herself.
But grace loves even her enemies, and is not puffed up with having a great many friends, nor has any value for family or birth, unless when joined with greater virtue.

Celine and I found ourselves in the midst of Society people, who made up the bulk of the pilgrimage, but we were not in the least dazzled by their titles. I understood the reference in the Imitation to the shadow of a great name, and that greatness is not to be found in a name, but in the soul. Isaias says that: The Lord God shall call his servants by another name (Is. lxv, 15), and we read in the Apocalypse: To him that overcometh I will give a white counter, and in the counter a new name written, which no man knoweth but he that receiveth it
(Apoc. ii, 17). It is only when we reach Heaven that we shall learn what are our titles of nobility, for then shall every man have praise from God (I Cor. iv, 5). He who chose to be poor and unknown on earth for the love of Christ will then be the first, the richest, and the most noble.

An open letter to our fellow Catholics on Election Eve
Many of our Catholic friends support Barack Obama in the upcoming election, despite being the most radically pro-abortion presidential candidate in American history. Other Catholics have publicly declared support for Obama as Catholics, arguing that their faith leads them to choose Obama over the pro-life candidate, John McCain. We believe that they have overlooked in their arguments of “social justice” the foundation of our faith and of social justice: the sanctity of human life, and its origin.
It is not our intent to argue legalistically from the Catechism to our brethren. We have both covered that extensively in posts over the last few months. We want to remind our parishioners of the central fact that social justice has to start with the protection of innocent human life, and that our faith does not allow a trade between abortion and other social-justice policies....

HLI: Commending the Bishops
Faithful Catholics in the US have been both stunned and gratified by the recent show of episcopal strength in dealing with the heretical nonsense of “Catholics” in public life who clearly misrepresent the Church’s teaching on vital issues. To date, more than fifty bishops have spoken out about this kind of misconduct or issued guidelines about voting at this critical juncture in our nation’s history. The trend is truly heartening. Let’s pray that it continues! Much more could be done, of course, but I am grateful that more bishops are standing up to strengthen and protect the faith of millions. Many have been longing for this show of valor from our fathers in the faith—and yes, they are our spiritual fathers. When they are strong, we are strong; and when they are weak—the flock is ravaged by wolves....
Nor can we fail to mention the strong pro-life stances of Archbishops Burke (now in Rome) and Chaput (Denver) as well as Bishops Vasa (Baker, OR), Farrell and Vann (Dallas, TX), Martino (Scranton, PA) and Mallooly (Wilmington, DE) who are representatives of a group of other bishops who have made their voices heard forcefully on the Catholic voting issue....

Attitude to the Poor
[12] He (Jesus) said to the man who had invited Him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid. [13] But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, [14] and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just."

Commentary:
14. A Christian acts in the world in the same way anyone else does; but his dealings with his colleagues and others should not be based on pursuit of reward or vainglory: the first thing he should seek is God's glory, desiring Heaven as his only reward (cf. Luke 6:32-34).

_______________
You told me to feed your lambs, as Our Lord once said to St Peter (she was novice-mistress in all but name). I was astonished, thinking myself incapable, and begged you to feed them yourself, allowing me to be of their number. Giving way to some extent, you named me first amongst them, rather than their mistress.
How is it that my youth and inexperience caused you no anxiety? There are few souls on earth who do not measure God's omnipotence by their own limited ideas. The world will have exceptions everywhere, but denies God the right to make them. It has always been the way of men to assess experience by length of years, for the youthful Psalmist sang: I am very young and despised (Ps. cxviii, 141). But in the same psalm he says: I have had understanding above ancients: because I have sought thy commandments. Thy word is a lamp, and a light to my paths. I am ready and am not troubled.

He said do no harm...
The Hippocratic Oath, attributed to a 5th century B.C. Greek physician, was referred to by Sen. Barack Obama in the third presidential debate in support of his opposition to legislation designed to protect children who are born alive. Opposing protection of human life, even after abortion has not terminated that life, makes Obama not only the most extreme pro-abortion presidential candidate ever, but also the most extreme ever to serve in Congress, according to Robert George, professor of jurisprudence at Princeton University.Source (with more letters) here.
The real irony here is that the original Hippocratic Oath stated: "I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy."
Deletions from Hippocrates' principles, including his interdictions against abortion and euthanasia, have been occurring since the 1960s. The obvious shift in emphasis from serving the sick to claims to benefit "humanity" has an alarming, maybe even tyrannical, ring to it.
Hippocrates would surely be astounded at the distortions of his oath in today's politically correct "ethical" environment, and stunned at the invocation of his oath to defend abortion and infanticide.

My Latest Email from Heretics for Obama
What are you going to find on your car after Mass tomorrow?Unapproved? Apparently these people think that authentically Catholic voters guides are, ipso facto, unapproved or unworthy of approval and they represent a clear and present danger to uninformed Catholics?
Dear Supporter,
I'm writing to you tonight from suburban Philadelphia, where a team of Catholics United activists [heretics] is helping to protect parishes from attempts to leaflet church parking lots with partisan voting guides and other unapproved election materials.
The good news is that we are finding it very easy to stop this potentially illegal activity. All we had to do tonight was let parish ushers know what was going on - they immediately asked the leafleters to leave! We're getting reports like this from members elsewhere in the country, in places like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. We wonder exactly what is illegal with truly Catholic guides? Fr Frank Pavove indicates that this attempt to stifle others may be illegal. He says:
"Please inform those to whom you communicate that they might also want to alert their pastors that a large number of people are ready to file lawsuits against any individual or institution who tries to intimidate or prevent citizens from fostering the electoral process or informing their fellow citizens about the candidates..."I would have loved to see one of the bozos outside of Church this morning trying to restrict the lawful expression of one's right to speak the truth...But these Obama supporters have as much courage as their earthly leader - zilch!
Please join our effort by keeping watch over your parish parking lot during Mass tomorrow morning. If you see partisan activists placing unapproved literature on your fellow parishioners' cars, tell someone. It's our right and our duty to protect the sacred space of our churches from this sort of electioneering, and to defend parishes from potentially illegal activity.I'm going to write this professed Catholic and see if he can tell me what I should consider 'unapproved' - the literature on my car this money did not back B Hussein Obama so I'm certain that it would fall into that category...
In Peace,
Chris Korzen

*** Understanding Obama: The Making of a Fuehrer By Ali Sina
(Obama exhibits a psychopathic narcissism)
[A MUST READ!!! In my opinion, having known & lived with someone with NPD, this article nails it: master manipulator, only concerned with self, a serial liar, thinks he's above the law, must be center of attention...Now I understand why I have such a powereful dislike of this man...
Some excerpts:]
In Vaknin’s words, “Pathological narcissism is a reaction to prolonged abuse and trauma in early childhood or early adolescence. The source of the abuse or trauma is immaterial: the perpetrators could be dysfunctional or absent parents, teachers, other adults, or peers.”_______________________
The pathological narcissist has a very weak sense of self. He compensates his devalued and injured self with pomposity and by projecting a false image of majesty and authority. He retreats into a bubble universe of fantasy, in which he is loved, respected and omnipotent. All children create such a world. Narcissists simply don’t leave it. They carry this world of pretence into their adulthood. With the passage of time, this world becomes to them as real as the real world, to the point that they can’t tell the difference.
When Obama acts presidential, he is simply acting out his childhood fantasy of omnipotence and grandeur. Emotionally, he is still a little hurt boy, neglected and unloved in the body and mind of a grown up man. Such people can be dangerous. Narcissists have the emotional maturity of a child, or even an animal, but the intellect of a man. They feel like a beast, but think like a human....
Narcissists are pathological liars. They lie even to themselves. Ironically, they are the first to believe their own lies. When normal people lie, they show signs of distress. Narcissists don’t. They can pass any polygraph test with flying colors. It is this conviction that fools people around them making them believe in their truthfulness and sincerity....
This election is like no other in the history of America. The issues are insignificant compared to what is at stake. What can be more dangerous than having a man bereft of conscience, a serial liar, and one who cannot distinguish his fantasies from reality as the leader of the free world?
I hate to sound alarmist, but one must be a fool if one is not alarmed. Many politicians are narcissists. They pose no threat to others. They are simply self serving and selfish. Obama evinces symptoms of pathological narcissism, which is different from the run-of-the-mill narcissism of a Richard Nixon or a Bill Clinton, for example. To him reality and fantasy are intertwined. This is a mental health issue, not just a character flaw. Pathological narcissists are dangerous because they look normal and even intelligent. It is this disguise that makes them trecherous....
America is on the verge of destruction. There is no insanity greater than electing a pathological narcissist as predident.

Socialism in disguise-Obama's Third-World radicalism. (De Silva)
As a naturalized American who grew up in the Third World and experienced firsthand the economic misery and impenetrable corruption under socialism, I know socialism when I see it - and I see socialism in Mr. Obama's plans. He has skillfully disguised his socialist agenda by an oratorical cloak of populism.

The Discourse on the Bread of Life (Continuation)
[37] All that the Father gives Me will come to Me; and him who comes to Me I will not cast out. [38] For I have come down from Heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me; [39] and this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I should lose nothing of all that He has given Me, but raise it up on the last day. [40] For this is the will of My Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in Him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

Commentary:
37-40. Jesus clearly reveals that He is the one sent by the Father. This is something St. John the Baptist proclaimed earlier on (Jn 3:33-36), and Jesus Himself stated it in His dialogue with Nicodemus (Jn 3:17-21) and announced publicly to the Jews in Jerusalem (Jn 5:20-30). Since Jesus is the one sent by the Father, the bread of life come down from Heaven to give life to the world, everyone who believes in Him has eternal life, for it is God's will that everyone should be saved through Jesus Christ. These words of Jesus contain three mysteries: 1) that of faith in Jesus Christ, which means "going to Jesus", accepting His miracles (signs) and His words; 2) the mystery of the resurrection of believers, something which begins in this life through faith and becomes fully true in Heaven; 3) the mystery of predestination, the will of our Father in Heaven that all men be saved. These solemn words of our Lord fill the believer with hope.
St. Augustine, commenting on vv. 37 and 38, praises the humility of Jesus, the perfect model for the humility of the Christian: Jesus chose not to do His own will but that of the Father who sent Him: "Humbly am I come, to teach humility am I come, as the master of humility am I come; he who comes to Me is incorporated in Me; he who comes to Me, becomes humble; he who cleaves to Me will be humble, for he does not his will but God's" ("In Ioann. Evang.", 25, 15 and 16).

Baptism (Continuation)
[3] Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? [4] We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
[5] For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His. [6] We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. [7] For He who has died is freed from sin. [8] But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him. [9] For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.
_____________
Commentary:
1-11. The universal dominion of sin, which began with the sin of Adam, is not the only event to be reckoned with. When sin reached its full extent, the grace brought by Jesus Christ came in superabundance. Through Baptism this grace reaches each of us and frees us from the control of sin. When we receive this Sacrament we die: that is to say, our blameworthiness is destroyed, we renounce sin once and for all, and are born again into a new life.
"The Lord", St. Ambrose tells the newly baptized, "who wanted His benefactions to endure, the serpent's plans to be turned to naught, and the harm done to be put right, delivered a sentence to mankind: 'You are dust, and to dust you shall return' (Genesis 3:19), and made man subject to death [...]. The remedy was given him: man would die and rise again [...]. You ask me how? [...] Pay attention. So that in this world too the devil's snare would be broken, a rite was instituted whereby man would die, being alive, and rise again, being alive [...]. Through immersion in water the sentence is blotted out: 'You are dust, and to dust you shall return'" ("De Sacramentis", II, 6).
This passage of the epistle, which reveals the key truths concerning Baptism, also reminds us of the profound meaning of this rite which Christ established, its spiritual effects in Christians and its far-reaching effects with respect to the Christian life. Thus, we can apply to Baptism what St. Thomas Aquinas says about all the sacraments: "Three aspects of sanctification may be considered--its very cause, which is Christ's Passion; its form, which is grace and the virtues; and its ultimate end, which is eternal life. And all these are signified by the sacraments. Consequently, a sacrament is a sign which is both a reminder of the past, that is, of the Passion of Christ, and an indication of what is effected in us by Christ's Passion, and a foretelling and pledge of future glory" ("Summa Theologiae", III, q. 60, a. 3).
In the specific case of Baptism, the various things which the Sacrament implies carry a special nuance--a new birth which presupposes a symbolic death. It reproduces in us not only the Passion, Death and burial of Christ, symbolized by immersion in water (verses 3-4, 6), but also new life, the life of grace which pours into the soul, enabling the person to share in the Resurrection of Christ (verses 4-5). This sharing in Christ's Resurrection to immortal life is a kind of seed which will ultimately produce the glorious resurrection of our bodies.
The baptized person is, therefore, someone newly created, someone born into a new life, someone who has moved out of darkness into light. The white garment used at Baptism symbolizes innocence and grace; the burning candle, the light of Christ--two symbols the Church uses in the baptismal liturgy to signify what is happening.
Thus, in Baptism, God "removes every trace of sin, whether original or personal" ("The Rite of Baptism", Introduction, 5) and also remits the penalties that these sins incur. On being baptized in the name of the Three Divine Persons, the Christian is shown God the Father's love for him (a love he has not merited), is given a share in the Paschal Mystery of the Son, and to him is communicated new life in the Spirit (cf. "Instruction on Infant Baptism", 20 October 1980, 9). Baptism, which is also described as "the door of the spiritual life", unites a person to Christ and to the Church by means of grace, which makes us children of God and heirs to Heaven. Finally, in addition to the infused virtues and supernatural gifts, the person is given "the graces necessary to live in a Christian way, and on his soul is impressed the sacramental character which makes him a Christian for evermore" ("St. Pius X Catechism", 250).
Baptism, which confers a "character", that is, a kind of seal confirming our Christian calling, gives us a share in Christ's priesthood and makes us capable of receiving the other sacraments.
4. It is easier to grasp the symbolism of burial and resurrection if one remembers that in earlier times, and particularly in the apostolic period, Baptism was usually administered by immersion in water--in some cases by total immersion, up to three times, with one Person of the Blessed Trinity being invoked each time. "They asked you, 'Do you believe in God the Father almighty?' You said, 'I believe', and you were immersed, that is, you were buried. Again they asked you, 'Do you believe in our Lord Jesus Christ and in His Cross?' You said, 'I believe', and you were again immersed. This time you have been buried with Christ, and he who is buried with Christ rises with Christ. For a third time you were asked, 'Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?' You said, 'I believe', and for a third time you were immersed, so that by this three-fold confession you might be loosed of your many attachments to your past life" (St. Ambrose, "De Sacramentis", II, 7).
Today Baptism is normally administered by pouring water over the head--a method also used in apostolic times and which gradually came into general use because it was found more convenient.
5. Just as the ingraft and the plant form a single thing and make a single principle of life, Christians by being grafted onto or incorporated into Christ through Baptism form one single thing with Him and begin to draw on His divine life. We are also "united with Him in a death like His": Christ suffered physical death; we, in Baptism, die spiritually to the life of sin. St. John Chrysostom explains this as follows: "Baptism is for us what the Cross and burial were for Christ; but with this diffe- rence: the Savior died physically, He was physically buried, whereas we ought to die spiritually. That is why the Apostle does not say we are 'united with Him with His death', but 'in a death like his'" ("Hom. on Rom.", 10).
9-10. Jesus Christ chose to bear all the consequences of sin, even though He was sinless. His voluntary death on the Cross and His glorious Resurrection broke the bonds of death, for Himself and for all His own. Death no longer shall have dominion: "[Christ died] that through death He might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage" (Hebrews 2:14-15). And as a consequence He won, for His own human nature and for us, a new life.
In all those who have been baptized these same events in Christ's life are in some way reproduced. "Our past sins have been wiped out by the action of grace. Now, so as to stay dead to sin after Baptism, personal effort is called for, although God's grace continues to be with us, providing us with great help" (Chrysostom, "Hom. on Rom.", 11). This personal effort might be encapsulated in a resolution: "May we never die through sin; may our spiritual resurrection be eternal" (St. J. Escriva, "Holy Rosary", 1st Glorious Mystery).

1sr Reading, Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls)
The death of the righteous
[1] But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,
and no torment will ever touch them.
[2] In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died,
and their departure was thought to be an affliction.
[3] and their going from us to be their destruction;
but they are at peace.
[4] For though in the sight of men they were punished,
their hope is full of immortality.
[5] Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good,
because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;
[6] like gold in the furnace he tried them,
and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.
[7] In the time of their visitation they will shine forth,
and will run like sparks through the stubble.
[8] They will govern nations and rule over peoples,
and the Lord will reign over them for ever.
[9] Those who trust in him will understand truth,
and the faithful will abide with him in love,
because grace and mercy are upon his elect,
and he watches over his holy ones.

Commentary:
3:1-4:20. This passage describes at some length the contrasting situations of the righteous and the ungodly in this life, in death, and beyond the grave. The author has consoling things to say to the righteous as regards afflictions; they have every reason to hope. But evildoers he describes as foolish; theirs is a fundamental error which will cause them grief now; any suffering they experience will do them no good; their death is grievous and so is what lies beyond it: “Two possibilities are laid open to us at the same time: life and death – and each person will come to the end that befits him. Life and death are like type types of coin, one belongs to God and the other to this world, each with its own hallmark: unbelievers deal in the currency of this world, and those who have remained faithful through love carry the coin of God the Father, which is marked with Jesus Christ. If we are not ready to die for him or to imitate his passion, we will not have his life within us” (St Ignatius of Antioch, Ad Magnesios, 5, 2).
3:1-9. These very poetic lines convey very well the notion of the reward that awaits the just in the after-life, but they are not very specific about it. The author uses expressions that correspond to the time in history and Revelation in which he lives, but they do enable us to get an idea of the state of the blessed: “The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God, and no torment will ever touch them” (v. 1); the righteous dead are “at peace” (v. 3), that is, in the sphere proper to God; they can be sure of immortality, athanasia (v. 4). They will abide in the Kingdom of God forever and share in God’s power to judge and rule (v. 8; cf. Mt 19:28) – a pointer to their power of intercession. One could say that the most encouraging line of all is, “the faithful will abide with him in love” (v. 9). Still to come is the explicit New Testament revelation which tells us that the blessed “shall see God as he is” (1 Jn 3:2), not as in a (dull) mirror but “face to face”; they will know him as he knows them (cf. 1 Cor 13:12) and they will be with Christ for- ever in heaven (cf. 1 Thess 4:17).

Just for Today, November 2
-Bk. IV, ch. ix.
_____________
You, who gave me leave to offer myself up to God, know what a flood of grace has poured into my soul from the time of my oblation. Since June 9, 1895, Love has surrounded me on all sides; at every moment of the day the merciful Love of God renews me, purifies me, and leaves no trace of sin on my soul.
I cannot bring myself to fear Purgatory; I know that I am not worthy to enter that place of expiation with the Holy Souls, but I also know that the fire of love is more sanctifying than that of Purgatory, that Our Lord does not want us to suffer needlessly, and that He would never inspire me with desires that He does not intend to fulfil.

Thoughts of St Augustine for November 2
THERE is no sort of doubt that the dead are helped by the prayers of Holy Church and the sacrifice of Salvation, and by alms, that God may deal more mercifully with them than their sins have deserved.
