She had a delicate digestion, and found the frugal fare at Carmel a hardship; some dishes actually made her ill, but as she hid the fact, no one knew it. A neighbour of hers at table tried in vain to discover her preferences, and the kitchen Sisters, knowing how easy she was to please, invariably served her with scraps and leavings. It was only during her last illness, when she was obliged to say what food upset her, that her mortification was discovered.
